Sebastian the cat is back to his normal playful self after undergoing brain surgery to dissect and remove a forebrain meningioma.

Sebastian is a 12 year-old domestic shorthair who had been displaying some behavioural changes such as over-grooming, becoming more clingy and a general loss to his overall confidence for a couple of months.

Sebastian underwent a full blood test including thyroid function testing, full urinalysis and blood pressure measurement which all showed a clean bill of health. A CT scan was performed of his head which identified a 20mm X 16mm X 17mm growth causing compression to his frontal lobes.

Sebastian’s owners decided to go ahead with surgery. The operation involved removing a section of the skull which lay over the tumour allowing clean dissection between the growth and healthy brain tissue. Sebastian received expert anaesthetic care from our anaesthetist Chris Seymour throughout his operation and recovered from the procedure without any significant complications and was discharged a couple of days later.

The tumour was sent for histopathological analysis which confirmed the presence of a meningioma. Meningioma’s in cats are typically slow growing and with successful excision have a good prognosis.
