Jacob a 10 year-old, male neutered Golden Retriever presented with recurrent otitis external and external ear infection. Upon examination Jacob’s ear canal was extremely narrow and thickened.

A CT scan was performed which identified bi-lateral end stage ear disease and significant calcification in both ears with the right ear being worse than the left. Medical treatment was performed but showed a poor response. We advised a total ear canal ablation to his right ear as a salvage procedure.

Jacob’s owner’s decided to go ahead with surgery. A total ear canal ablation was performed. It involved the removal of the diseased and infected ear canal whilst leaving the inner ear (the hearing organ) itself (the inner ear) in place. The middle ear chamber (tympanic bulla) was carefully inspected, and any abnormal tissue was removed.

Jacob received expert anaesthetic care from our anaesthetist Chris Seymour throughout his operation and recovered from the procedure without any significant complications and was discharged a couple of days later and has made a full recovery.
